As planned, I packed up and started bicycling last Friday, but got a later start than I had hoped. Rather than end up riding through Los Angeles and Orange County sprawl as the sun was setting, still searching for an undeveloped, non-gated place to camp, I decided to head for the nearest state park. From Echo Park I rode Sunset Boulevard all the way to the coast, passing through Silver Lake, Hollywood, Beverley Hills and Bel Air, where the road becomes more suited for fast fancy cars. After circling Santa Monica, I headed north on the Pacific Coast Highway to spend the night at Leo Carillo State Park. Expecting the place to be deserted, I was surprised when two other cyclists rolled in, one from London, the other a local who started a fire we talked around until all turning for the night at 8:30.

Opus 40

Harvey Fite spent 37 years sculpting this abandoned bluestone quarry into Opus 40. Originally intended to display his sculptures, the pedestals, pools, and ramps took on a life of their own. The 9 ton monolith at the center was raised using the methods of the ancient Egyptians and a pickup truck. Harvey Fite died in 1976, at the age of 76, after accidentally driving his lawnmower over the edge of the quarry. Saugerties, New York.
